Understanding Glove Lengths:

What "Button Length" Really Means

When shopping for formal gloves, you’ll notice labels like 2-button, 12-button, or etc. Despite the name, button length refers to length measurement, not decoration, with each "button" representing about one inch above the wrist.

A 16-button glove, for example, gracefully extends 16 inches up the arm. This timeless system has long been used to define the elegance of formal and evening gloves. See a helpful cheatsheet below.

2-Button

Also called "bracelet length," these gloves cover just past the wrist. They pair beautifully with bracelets or watches.

4-Button

Mid-forearm length, offering a slightly longer, more formal look ideal for cocktail dresses or less formal evening attire.

8-Button

Reaches just below the elbow. A traditional choice for evening events, balancing elegance and practicality.

12-Button

Extends just above the elbow. These gloves create a dramatic, vintage-inspired look often seen with sleeveless gowns.

16-Button

Extends halfway up the upper arm. Perfect for formal galas, weddings, and debutante balls, offering a classic, refined silhouette.

22-Button

These gloves reach all the way to the shoulder and are reserved for the most formal occasions, offering a stunning, show-stopping appearance.

Tip: Each "button" = about 1 inch of length above the wrist.

A note about actual buttons:

While the term "button length" refers only to the measurement, there are some gloves (particularly traditional mousquetaire styles) that feature three real buttons at the wrist to allow the glove to be opened and slipped on more easily.

These come in 12 and 16 button options only.
